Short and sweet. Thanks.
The kanji "shin" in shinken shobu: is that the same kanji as heart/mind, so "real" would mean "heartfelt"?

No, it's not the same kanji. If you can display japanese: 真剣. The "shin" (also read as "makoto") kanji in shinken and shinken shobu means "reality", "true". Shinken, in this context, can mean either "earnestness"/"seriousness" or "real sword". Therefore, "shinken shobu" -> serious match.
