Some questions on "self-training"...

OK, my cousin was trained in Kamas, and I want to expand my horizons a bit (having taken Escrima and Jo Staff, as well as Sais) and try them. Is using books or videos to get started too risky?

Also, if anyone has used the hand/foot claws...how do they work? Do they really help a lot?
