Hi: I've been looking without any success in the internet for the name of the rope worn by the samurai around their shoulders. Does anyone know it's name? Is there an official japanese term for this?

I think he's probably talking about tasuki ( 襷 ).

Hi Daniel

I dunno the name, but I did ask an 8th Dan Sensei when I was I Japan for a Shinsa about it - after numerous whiskeys - he grabed my sword, quickly removed the sageo put one bit in his mouth and tied his kimono back. So as far as I know - a sageo is what was used - maybe it goes by another name?

Cheers

Sageo sure can be used as tasuki, but probably aren't your prefered option. Etymologically speaking, sageo ( 下げ緒 ) refers to a cord which hangs down - the cord attached to the scabbard of your sword. On the other hand, we have tasuki ( 襷 ) which is made up of the two parts meaning clothing ( koromo/衣 ) and to pull up ( ageru/挙げる ) - an item which pulls your clothes up.

Sageo can be pressed into service as tasuki, but aren't the only items which can be used, so we're really both right. Do a search for "tasuki" here on e-budo, and I'm sure you'll find much more on the topic.

So far , looking for information on what you just said, sageo is just the cord knot made to hold the sword. About tasuki, all I found was that it is a japanese animation hero name. Maybe you can help me out on finding a link and pasting it here. Long time ago I found one that even showed how to tie it yourself, i forgot where it was obviously.

Do a search here in E-Budo, using "tasuki" as the key word and check the "List By Post" radio button; you'll find several discussions about it.

Here's just one for starters:
