Hi everyone,
It is my sad duty to report that Bob Simmons, one of
the founders of the Southern California Iaido
Association (SCIA) and its president from 1991 through
1998, passed away on January 16, 2006 of a heart
attack. He was 69 years old.
Bob's wife of 47 years, Elise Marie, had written to
Takeshi Yamaguchi sensei and Jean Kodama sensei of Bob's death in
March, but the letter was not received until late last
week.
Here is the obituary that Elise Simmons enclosed in
her letter:
Simmons, Robert
"Age 69, resident of Home Gardens for 42 years, died
Monday, January 16, 2006, at UCI Medical Center in
Orange, CA. Born in Chicago, IL, moved to California
in 1954.
"He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Elise Marie
Simmons, and mother-in-law Louella R. Patterson.
"Robert served in the Navy Reserve as 2nd class Petty
Officer. Robert was a Senior Designer Electronic
Packaging at Parker Hannifin Inc. Parker Aerospace
Control Systems Division. He taught Martial Arts at
UCI for 20 years including Aikido, Iaido, and Kendo,
also taught Martial Arts at Corona Parks & Recreation
with his wife for 35 years. They taught Aikido, Iaido,
Kendo, Judo, Karate & Jiu-Jitsu. Robert taught all
over CA inclluding Law Enforcement, military
hospitals, senior citizen center, etc.
"Services were held on Monday, 1/23 at Thomas Miller
Mortuary."
Bob was a good man and was very dedicated in his
martial arts training up until his retirement. He will
be remembered as a tireless practitioner, teacher and
promoter of iaido here in Southern California. His
legacy will be remembered by all of us.
