Does anybody know, where can I buy a red and white (block) belt in the UK? - please don't say Playwell.com.
I would be grateful for any help.

Do you mean a standard red belt with white, or a white with red in it?

Do you mean one of those belts that people weare when they want to feel that they are "higer" on the martial arts latter. Eventhough a regular black belt will keep you gi closed just the same?
I absolutelly mean anything rude byu my coment, i just wander why people would weart one of those? Because we all know that the belt means squat.

You are no doubt aware that this type of obi is also used for ceremonial use (see my post above), but in answer to what keeps a gi tied up - so does a white belt.

Oh,and by the way,it may mean squat to you but I believe it didnt to Jigoro Kano. I stand corrected on the following quotation:
"Jigoro Kano created the red/white belt around 1930 to recognize the special achievements of high ranking black belts. Other arts, such as the tea ceremony and swordsmanship, provided recognition for their masters in the form of a special tea pot or sword. Jigoro Kano chose to recognize sixth, seventh, and eighth degree black belts with a special obi made of alternating red and white panels (kohaku obi). The colors red and white have been used in Judo since Jigoro Kano started the first Red and White Tournament in 1884. He also created the red belt to recognize 9th and 10th dans at the same time".

Plinio, it sounds like you have your panties in a twist! ;)
Let me see....students wear a yellow belt to show that "they are higher on the martial arts ladder." Some wear purples, browns, reds, greens for the same thing. Then you have that really obnoxious black belt - obviously a sign that the wearer is an arrogant braggart.
Where do you draw the line?

Colered belts are good for safety by reminding senior students when they are working with lower belts they can injure them, especially in seminars or with new students they might not be familier with etc. Also, if a dojo teaches Humility and Respect properly, the students won't become arrogant buffoons at any level or colored obi.

thankyou for reminding me of the need for humility and the irrelevance of high grades. I have no intention of wearing this belt unless the man who gave it to me asks me to on a formal occasion. since the one he gave me is not my size - i would like to have one that is in a fit state to wear should i need to. I do not have a need to feel that I am "higher" on the ladder, but the fact is - I am. It is no big thing, but I am not about to cause any offence to my sensei

Gentlemen !
The thread's main topic as I saw it was Mr. Simon Ford-Powell inquiring where he could purchase such belt. Mr. Plinio, you're welcome to start another thread to voice your opinions of the matter. However, As I have seen some of the poster's responses to your post, I highly suggest you don't.
Thank you and please drive safely .... :)

Okay, but I still think that its's a way of saying "look at me, my rank is higher than yours." It really seems very second grade.
I myself am pretty high ranked in jujutsu, but my obi is just to keep my center thight and my hakama on right. I could care less what color arrangement it was.

Horses for courses. Everyone's entitled to their opinion. However, history tells us it wasn't originally designed for self aggrandisement. If you want to take a more modest deprecating stance that's fine, just acknowledge it is not all about my belt is more glorious than yours.
