Hi Mike!
Hakka or Hakko Ryu?
I found this for Hakko Ryu:http://www.hakkojujutsu.com/OurHistory.asp
Its not Koryu! Founded 1941! If the history is correct the founder was a pupil of Takeda Sokaku of Daito-Ryu. I found a german language website that says that Hakko Ryu was 500years old! The guys on the pictures wearing red-white belts over there hakama! Not a good sign in my eyes!!!! Maybe a sound jujutsu sytem but gendai( if this your concern with "legit")!
Best

As Derek said, it's legit, though there are some offshoots that aren't. Any of the mainline Hakko ryu styles that are now under the Kokodo Renmei are valid. Not koryu no, by definition and methodology, but, there are similarities compared with most gendai.

Oh and sven whatever you saw isnt mainline hakko, everyone knows the history, and, red/white belts are not used.

Here are two websites (English and Japanese) of the mainline. The Dentokan and Hakko Denshin ryu etc, are no longer part of the honbu dojo. Its an interesting art as it involves the use of shiatsu points within some of their waza rather than kyusho.

Yes its a gendai system, but the use of belts (another modern aspect) is used in many koryu systems nowdays. We use them in the Kokusai jujutsu renmei as well. In hakkoryu the purple belt is the highest rank. I think the Tenshin hyoho Kukishinden group also use that as well, might want to check up on that though.

Enjoy.
