Can anyone comment on the meaning and/or origin of this symbol?

Can anyone comment on the symbol below?

I usually am told that it "represents Okinawan Karate". Nevertheless so far I did not get any consistent explanation regarding where it comes from or why it looks as it does.

Can anybody enlighten me on that?
