For the last couple of months, I have been learning about kenjutsu from a friend who learned from a friend who went to a dojo in Scottland. I fear I may have picked up some bad habits and made critical mistakes in my training. I know truely learn the art, it has to be in a formal setting taught by a true sensei. However, it is proving difficult to find anyone who teaches closer than the Seattle area.
I am willing to learn and commute (even if it is to Seattle) if given the chance to show my commitment to learning the art.

Not exactly kenjutsu, but Obukan Dojo in Beaverton has Kendo and Iaido.
Here's a lnk: http://www.obukan.com/
I can heartily recommend Iaido as a way to learn the fundamentals of swordsmanship while developing a healthy body, mind, and spirit.

Muso Shinden Ryu iai is practiced at Multnomah Aikikai (http://www.homestead.com/multnomahaikikai/). I'd go to either of these places, see if it's your cup of tea. If they're not, ask if they know anyone else in the area. Alternatively, if you're willing to commute, Eugene Aikikai (http://canonnet.com/eugeneaikikai/) practices iai 3 times a week.
Good luck.

If you wish to learn the sword, I would highly recommend joining the Obukan and seeking out the instruction of Stephen Strauch sensei. His lineage reaches back to some serious ken through Mikami's Shiseikan in Hawaii and to old style kendo and Ono-ha influences.

If you're willing to make a drive to Seattle, WA., Garron Billick is a Kenjutsu instructor of Nami Ryu Aiki Heiho which is well worth the while as well. Garron Billick gurrno@gmail.com
