I'm interested to know if there are any sources (online, book) or individuals here with knowledge about the original Isshin-ryu tradition as taught outside the SMR in times distant. I've done the regular searches here and there but unfortunetly the most common mentioning of Isshin-ryu is either the SMR Isshin-ryu or the Isshin-ryu karate system.

I'm familiar with the story of how the Isshin-ryu came to be represented in the Shinto Muso-ryu, namely that Shiraishi Hanjiro got a Menkyo Kaiden from Isshin-ryu exponent Morikata Heisaku, but other than that I know next to nothing of the art outside SMR, before and after Shiraishi Hanjiro got his Menkyo. I also learned that the original system had a few other weapons and skills besides the kusarigama which is also a source of interest for me.

Hi Fred!
Could you specify what kind of weapons? Maybe contact Phil Relnick and ask what he Knows about the topic!

Greetings from Germany!

From what I can gather the system included bōjutsu, hobaku, hojojutsu torite, kusarigama and shuriken but that it "fragmented" over the years.
