Here's the Old Thread (http://www.e-budo.com/forum/showthread.php?t=36209)

Just seeing if there is any interest in this again. In January of this year I was visiting family in Vancouver, I tried to get it started, but didn't plan ahead far enough. I've learned my lesson this time. :)

I'll be visiting family in Vancouver during the first two weeks in October. I'm hoping to have up to two batto-do training sessions, possibly at the Kensington Community Centre (5175 Dumfries Street in Vancouver). Possible dates are October 4th and October 9th in the evenings.

Just seeing if anyone's interested. Let me know.

Jay

Hi Jay. Got your e-mail, too.

Got out my calendar and I've written in the two dates in October.

In pencil. ;)

Okay, this study group is good to go!

I have one firm training date set up: Friday, October 5 from about 6:30pm to 9:00pm. (I might move it from 7pm - 10pm, but the date will remain the same.)

I have a proposed second training dates of either Tuesday, October 9th or Wednesday October 10th, same times if there is additional interest. (Tuesday will be the first choice.)

Training location:

Harry Jerome Sports Centre
7564 Barnet Hwy
Burnaby, B.C.
(near Simon Fraser University)

Please contact me if you plan to attend. I've reserved a decent-sized room, but can try to move to a larger room if more people plan to show up.

Fees: None. I'm taking care of all of the facilities fees.

What to bring: Iaito or bokken. (No live blades.) If you have them, keiko-gi, hakama, and obi. If you don't, then workout clothes are okay. Tabi is okay too. No knee-pads. This is batto-do, so all of the forms are standing-forms.

PM me with any questions.

There's a 15 minute editing window from time of first post. After that, the post is locked.

Anyway...

Okay, I'm requesting time off from work for both dates.

Next question: does anyone know if the rule requiring passports versus other ID for US citizens coming back from Canada (and Mexico) has gone into effect yet? Homeland Security keeps changing the dates.

Brian, I found this at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_3254.html. I assume that it is current.

Since January 23, 2007, all citizens of the United States, Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean have been required to present a valid passport when entering the United States at any airport. This includes:

Children of any age, including children of Legal Permanent Residents who are United States citizens.
Mexican citizens who have a Border Crossing Card (BCC) when entering the United States by air. (The BCC is still valid in lieu of a passport and visa for land border crossings within the border region.) The BCC may be used as a visa.
Due to longer than expected processing times for passport applications in the face of record-breaking demand, the federal government is making an accommodation for air travel. U.S. citizens traveling to Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda who have applied for but not yet received passports can temporarily enter and depart from the United States by air with a government issued photo identification and Department of State official proof of application for a passport through Sept. 30, 2007.

Sorry; I should have specified the rules for automobiles. I knew about the air regulations, but since I'm less than 2 hours from metro Vancouver by car, I'll be driving.

The site you cited did have the (current) answer though; to wit:

Do I need a passport to go on a cruise or to travel by vehicle across the land border to Canada or Mexico?

No, but it is recommended that U.S. citizens carry and present government-issued identification when requested. Although not currently required to present a document, U.S. citizens arriving by land and sea must still establish to the satisfaction of the inspecting officer that they are U.S. citizens.

As early as January 2008, the Departments of Homeland Security and State will begin to implement WHTI at land and sea ports of entry. A Notice of Proposed Rule Making outlining a phased implementation is expected to be published in the Federal Register within the next two weeks.

So unless the rule changes between now and October it looks like I'm safe.

Thanks for the link.

The wheels of government turn slowly...

The Tuesday training date is penciled in at the moment. I can go ahead and book that about two weeks prior to the training date.

Just a little bit over three weeks to go! The Friday October 5th Training Date is still firm. I'll wait another week or so before deciding on the Tuesday training date.

I passed the info on to some people who may be interested but haven't heard much back.

I may not be able to make it myself but thank you for the PM. I'll let you know if I hear back but I would guess maybe one person will come.
