So any old farts here remembered what it felt like to put on a keikogi for the first time ? Funny thoughts ? Awkward moments ? Tying the obi ? and other entertaining anecdotes ? Can you guys even remember the brand ?

pfft! I'm not that old or experienced, but I'd rather repress my first Gi experience anyways. I bought a jujutsu-gi (for my Aikido training) made for a guy 190 cm tall..I'm 173...Need I say more? :o Well one thing: I had my mother shorten my trousers, but the jacket always had too long sleeves which made it difficult for wrist-grabbing much to the annoyance of my fellow-students :o.

My first time wearing a hakama in public was quite embarrasing/funny. I was taking kendo at a Japanese Saturday school, so there were about fifty Japanese kids in the class, five Japanese instructors, all the kids families and about four non Japanese student. One of the older kids helped me get into my hakama and to get it tied. I made my way out unto the floor feeling quite special. Sensei came over to compliment me on how I looked and suggested I practice getting into seiza before class. He gave me a pointer on popping my hakama back and then how to proceed to seiza. I popped the hakama as instructed and nothing happened other than the hakama getting very tight. Sensei walked up and grabbed my hakama and pulled it out to one side revealing that both of my legs were in one side. He pointing out to all the other sensei, all the kids and the all of their family members. everyone had a good laugh including myself. Needless to say I never made the same mistake again. :)

Just last week I wore my gi top inside out. Sensei pointed it out to me, then kept saying, "Don't look at it! Concentrate!".

I still have my first - a Dragon judogi (the pants have been long gone). It is quite shredded and stained, totally unserviceable, but I just cannot get rid of it.
I was quite proud of my new judogi - then I was choked-out with it. Very disconcerting for a newb to be choked out but something you are proud of. ;)
