Hello Forum,

does someone knows the Imaeda-Ryû (今枝流, or Imaeda-Shin-Ryû, 今枝新流)?

There is a small post on Wikipedia but nothing more. It was founded by Matsuoka Masachika (?) in 1773 and the Jitte and Jô are part of the curriculum.

Maybe somebody has further informations for me.

Hi,
the ´78 edition of the Bugei ryûha daijiten lists Imaeda shin ryû (jô) and Imaeda ryû (ken, iai, bô, jô) on the pages 85-88. There is also a rather detailed lineage chart and additional information Imaeda ryû. Matsuoka is listed as the founder of Imaeda shin ryû.
Unfortunately I don´t have a scanner, maybe someone else could send you the pages.

Imaeda Shin Ryu is taught as part of the curriculum at the Takeuchi Ryu Dojo in Okayama, it is also taught in the Okayama Daigaku in Okayama City. It dates back quite some way and is connected to the Shojitsu Kenri Kataichi Ryu through one of it's headmasters.

The Kataichi Ryu still teach a version of the Jojutsu as part of their school, and I believe that this was still seperate and called the Imaeda Ryu. (May be wrong on that one though).

The Kiai used in the Ryuha are impressive, long calls that are intended to add spirit to the techniques. Those techniques involve Jo tai Jo, and Jo tai Ken.

It is predominantly trained by women at the University, as a kind of aside to the basic Takeuchi Ryu training. Some of the techniques I have seen done in training there are so sharp they made my eyes water. Great stuff.

Were you in Okayama for the Taikai this year? They demoed there along with us.

Hi Ben,

thanks for the interesting post!

I wasn´t in Okayama for the Taikai, but one of my friends was there. I suppose he made some short videos of the demonstrations.

Impressive Kiai? Sounds interesting!

Thanks a lot.

Micha
