Paul,
run a websearch for NJStar. it's a type of software that will allow your word processing application to handle kanji. it will also allow your web browser to read japanese text on websites. i'm not that familiar with the package but friends of mine have used it with some success. HTH.

Hi Paul.
If you want to type directly in to MS Word (and most other MS Office applications and even Photoshop 6) you should use IME for Japanese. You should be able to download it (free) from Microsoft homepage.
Another little nice software is JWPce, the way you type in this is not as simple as with IME, but it has some nice features such as a quite good dictionary and radical lookup for kanji etc. It also gives you the possibility to import and export most Japanese encoding (JIS, Shift-JIS, EUC, Unicode, etc.).
You can find this program (which also is a freeware) here: http://www.physics.ucla.edu/~grosenth/japanese.html
