The author didn't provide a photo credit or any attribution, so I'm guessing he grabbed a non-copyright photo, maybe from an online source. Perhaps it's one of the notable Itto Ryu practitioners/teachers of the art from the 19th century or early 20th century?
That is a stock photo from the 19th century. You can find it on Wikimedia.. I believe I used it myself in one of my books.
