Any tips on what kind of wood to use?
Kashi (White Oak), It’s actually very easy to work with and produces an excellent bokken.

Bodock wood, also called "Osage". Extremely hard to work with without a belt sander, but EXTREMELY tough and heavy. Will do some serious damage if you're not careful.
Use the search button at the top of the page and use "bokken AND wood" as your serach parameter. There have been several good threads on that topic recently, including discussions of the benefits and pitfalls of red and white oak, ironwood, ipe, biwa, etc.Quote:

HTH.
if its your first one I recommend getting a good hickory axe handle to start with.
The handle, a small hand plane, a wood rasp, and a good sanding block are all you need.
I prefer white oak from japan for my bokken, but its hard to come by here.
Almost any sledge or axe handle will be good impact grade wood suitable for bokken.
Hi, Matt. I was asking a similar question about a month ago, & someone pointed me to http://ejmas.com/tin/tinart_taylor_1100.htm
That's a great site to start with. :D I'm sure you'll be keeping your own notes as you work your way through your first couple of bokken & shoto. Have fun!
