The following text is from notes taken at the 4th IJF meetings and seminars (it is Daigo that say this):

"Kata – follow precise way. Some techniques are not useful if they are practiced just as a form. Kata is about death or life! This way to look at kata is called Kata no tori in Japanese. If Tori's attack is not effective, Uke might attack again. In kata, everything is pre-arranged. Uke can defend himself. But if we would mix up the order of the techniques, it would be very difficult. In principle, if you practice kata only in the pre-arranged order, it would be very difficult to defend yourself in a real fight. If you cannot defend yourself, you will die. In high level, you must be prepared for all kinds of attack – not just the pre-arranged ones. In kata, all atemi is performed with right hand. In practice, possible with left hand. In high level, be aware normal right hand – suddenly left hand. If you cannot defend, it is not enough. This way of kata practice is called Kata no tori."

Does anyone practice Kata in this way?
