    Default Name on Belt

I need help. I want to put my name on my belt in Japanese, but I'm not sure which format to use, hiragana or katakana? Also, how would you say my name in Japanese? Its funny, but I've seen different translations from different people.

    thanks

From my understanding, our English names will never 'really' be translated into Japanese. I think a lot of people translate their name into Romanji and then the Katakana characters can be used.

Eri Takase's web page ( http://www.takase.com ) has a wonderful table of names and their translations. It's a wonderful site, period.

Jim Breen's Japanese Page is also a wonderful resource to explore. Spend some time on his japanese names page.

    Good luck Robato.

From what I know, one generally doesn't translate names. One might transliterate them into katakana (which is a script generally reserved for sounds that are not of Japanese language: this includes noises, the many onomatopoetic 'words', and foreign words).

Kanji is possible if one pieced together stuff phonetically regardless of meaning, but I doubt it'd be that meaningful. There is a trend these days to kanji-ify any western chick names that are pronounceable sans mutilation to native Japanese speakers, but I don't think that's what you're looking for.

Robaato Kuron would be my guess, but I'm far from knowledgeable about anything Japanese. I don't know how to do Japanese on this thing so I can't write the appropriate katakana.

Here is what my current rank certificate gives as my name in Japanese. I've tried to match it up with a katakana chart, but with no luck.

    What does it say phonetically?

    ro - ba - a - to ko- ro - ne

(the long vowel in 'Robert' being indicated by a dash).
