    Swordsman vs. karate tonfa weilder.

    Swordsman cuts leg off...

tonfa weilder, "Tis' only a flesh wound....have at thee!"

    Watermelon cut...one word: Scary.

Ninja guys...no comment. None needed, painstakingly obvious and self explanatory.

    Mr. Lindsey,

Where do you find all this madness?

    Phil,

Perhaps it's just my heritage, but I think, "Hey, aren't you supposed to be blindfolded before you try to hit that pinata?"

There are so many opportunities for caption contests here, too.

Looks like the guy with the watermellon may be pulling a scam. Look how flat that towel is. Not human shaped at all. Betcha he's got a thick board or a metal plate under that mellon.

Where do you start to criticise! hands too close together, fist grips, no centre, no threat, no NOTHING. Awful, awful, awful.
I've seen a funnier one though... a guy in a martial arts catalogue wearing hakama back to front... a new fashion perhaps, I'll try it at the next seminar, see if it catches on....
For the karate people reading this, its like looking at someone in ready stance from the side with their fingers locking their hands together, telling you they are ready to start sparring, or kicking with your toes curled under. Hmmmm.
On a serious note, try Colin Hyakutake's site and read Iwata sensei's books in the Tosa section. He is VERY keen on correct grip and goes into considerable detail, not only in the books but also at the seminars he runs.

Why are you reading this instead of being out training? No excuses accepted...

I saw that in a Hong Kong kung-fu movie once too, where half the wicked 'Japanese' had it on semi-correctly, and the other half with the koshita covering their bellies. I nearly spat beer all over the screen. Sword "technique" was interesting in that one too.

I haven't paid attention to the conversation, but the pictures are priceless. I'm rating this a 5 star thread.

    Folks:
Much of the distance in your hands on the Tsuka has to do with flexiblity to cut around a war helmet and armor. You'll see most Gendai arts have closer in hands than many Koryu arts. Depends what they were designed for.

I'll make sure you NEVER get the photos of me ca. 1968 before I started learning iai!! Shucks, for that matter ... you won't get any of me in 1971 either!! Hoo-Wee ... would you, Toby, Big Tony, St. Bob the Elder, and others get a laugh at my expense!

    Default Speaking of watermelons...

I was at this demo recently where a Vietnamese stylist did a sword demo: One student was lying down on a table in front of him with a melon cradled on their throat. Another was kneeling behind him with a melon balanced on the back of the neck.

The swordsman was to cut the first melon before spinning around and chopping the one behind him. Anyway, he makes the first cut OK, but just as he's about to spin around, the other melon falls off his other student's neck - all the student could do was drop to his side and go foetal.

Luckily our demo friend twigged what had happened and managed to pull the cut. It was scary as hell.

    Cheers,

    Mike

Not only is that last one southpaw, if you look really carefully, it's a golf grip. I guess he's trying to work on his slice.
