why is the guy wearing a montsuki OUTSIDE his hakama about six notes up from this one? A bit like wearing your shirt out of your trousers I suppose...
Time to move this thread into bad budo, too many embarrassing photos for the people concerned. As a matter of interest, anyone have their photo up here?

Why are you reading this instead of being out training? No excuses accepted...

    Tim,

That's the haori [jacket], if I'm not mistaken ... look for the connector-ties at chest level.

Although I've seen iai and other budo performed in formal montsuki-hakama, I've never seen it done with haori. But, that is not to say it is improper or cannot be done.

Also, the photo referenced proves that "you can dress 'em up, but you can't take 'em out!"

    Regards,
    Guy

I've seen sensei visiting from Japan wearing Haori, but not during a workout.

This blew my mind. I've studied Kenjutsu for 6 years and I guess I'm not at the level where I study in jump boots yet.

Re: why is the guy [7th dan with sword] wearing a montsuki OUTSIDE his hakama about six notes [now about a dozen notes] up from this one?

Because a montsuki is a formal haori. A haori is a jacket. So, the montsuki is worn outside the hakama.

Unless you like to tuck your jacket into your pants.

If kata are going to be formulated using a tomato stake, at least they could clean the soil off first. Isn't he one of those "American Kenjutsu" people?

Haven't figured out this fascination with shira-saya yet... do you shooters like to use oilcloth for a holster? Anyways at least the guy with the shinai in the previous post has a semi-OK grip, even if his left arm is doing nothing.
