I don't practice Aikido or Daito Ryu, but this article says it clearly, and precisely.

I agree -- the piece makes many excellent points. Sometning I have observed in my own training is that while specific techniques can be taught, unless there is a martial spirit present, those techniques will always be lame and inadequate. No sword, no Aiki...
