Has anyone ever heard of this? Someone from our dojo made this, and it was actually quite good (I was very pleasantly surprised). She had mentioned that it was pretty common among Japanese-Americans in Hawaii where she grew up.

I can not answer the question if it is popular with Japanese Americans that are from Hawaii but I have had my fill of spam “nori” back in my undergrad days from Filipino friends of mine. I recall that it was good at first but after a while like most things it gets old.
Spam and other canned meats revolutionized diets on many pacific islands that had been dependant on fish etc. for protein before.I can not answer the question if it is popular with Japanese Americans that are from Hawaii
