But too dense to think we didn't know that? and WE were waiting on him to respond? Remember "Patience" is a virtue, not to mention that Japanese word we occasionally see.

    Default flabbergasted you didn't know..

    Who cares?

I have been a teacher at two universities and two high schools.

I believe this would be the proper manner to address a person at a level in which I have been ranked or been called other than silly master, shihan, guru, grandmaster, or sensei.

Many use the word sensei, shihan, etc to address themselves.. I feel that is silly.
Just last week I was here at a Russian seminar and the guide asked me what I liked to be called..
    Why?

Because he had training in traditional martial arts and wanted to be correct.. seeing that I am at a much higher ranking than he was..
But I felt silly being asked..

Have you ever asked what to be called?

Some women like to role play as well..
Some like 'daddy'.. or 'doctor' the best.. but I also have found they like 'coach' as well.. I believe it is from their high school days..
But I have had them say 'master blaster' too...

On the other hand a shaman called me a shaman.. so what does it mean?

Nothing.. It all makes a difference if you can satisfy their needs..in which I do..
    Get the meaning..
    SEEK,
    SMACK,
    SLAM,
    SUBMIT..

Women love the methodology of my Dojo..

This I feel is the most confuse-ing to many E-Budo'ers

But then again.. Hatsumi sensei called me 'young master' a few times..
His wife said I had 'sweet movement' too..

I could say... 'young master with sweet movement Ralph Severe'...

But not to fo-get a few doctors have said I'm a true doctor of life.. a healer..wow...
    So we have it..
"young master with sweet movement Ralph Severe the doctor of life"

"Many use the word sensei, shihan, etc to address themselves.. I feel that is silly." >> So others addressing themselves the grade that was awarded to them (either thru hard work, sweat and tears - or thru politics) are silly but "Professor" is ok ?

    Have I understood correctly ?

I just wanted to get an anchor from your viewpoint

    Default ok

I believe to really understand me.. you must take a step into my world..
Sit and chat as I paint..
maybe go for a hike with me in the deep woods and chat about nature...
also sit and chat over good food..
and of course go tac shooting rifle, pistol and shotgun..
but not to leave out sitting and having me sew things or correct some clothing for you..
help me with a game of football(soccer)...
have a cup of tea and chat about the world..
    spar some..unarmed..
    spar some weaponry..
watch me hit on some pads...
go out to eat with my friends.. maybe family.. if you can stand them..
chat about women.. and men and how we are forced to feelthe way we do..
chat about feelings of freedom..life... death..
    talk about psychology..
    watch a movie..or two...
set some traps and see if they work..
    repair some firearms...
    life weights..
    sing some songs..
    go camping..
    rappel a hill...
    go and feed some animals..
sit and view some good pornos....
look at some of my photos of my girlfriend's butt..
    chat about a good book...........
    go shopping..
    etc...

it's way to sad e-forums can't really pass on someone's true self.. this is a game.. giving it to much respect or thinking is pure BS..

    swing away..

Actually, it is not only improper, it is illegal in many states. The following is from Florida, but most other states have similar statutes. (I just happened to have this one saved in a text file.)
    Florida Statute § 817.567

817.567. Making false claims of academic degree or title

    (1) No person in the state may claim, either orally or in writing, to possess an academic degree, as defined in s. 246.021, or the title associated with said degree, unless the person has, in fact, been awarded said degree from an institution that is:
    (a) Accredited by a regional or professional accrediting agency recognized by the United States Department of Education or the Commission on Recognition of Postsecondary Accreditation;
    (b) Provided, operated, and supported by a state government or any of its political subdivisions or by the Federal Government;
    (c) A school, institute, college, or university chartered outside the United States, the academic degree from which has been validated by an accrediting agency approved by the United States Department of Education as equivalent to the baccalaureate or postbaccalaureate degree conferred by a regionally accredited college or university in the United States;
    (d) Licensed by the State Board of Independent Colleges and Universities pursuant to ss. 246.011-246.151 or exempt from licensure pursuant to s. 246.085; or
    (e) A religious seminary, institute, college, or university which offers only educational programs that prepare students for a religious vocation, career, occupation, profession, or lifework, and the nomenclature of whose certificates, diplomas, or degrees clearly identifies the religious character of the educational program.
In this case, the inappropriate use of an academic title is a first degree misdemeanor. The person doesn't even have to reside in Florida, he could just be advertising on the Internet or something else which is read in Florida.

These self-proclaimed martial arts experts can claim any rank or silly title, such as master, shihan, guru, grandmaster, sensei, or the infamous "soke" without breaking any laws. Use of titles like professor or doctor, though, crosses the legal line and is punishable by law.

If you haven't earned it, stop using it!

    Don

Interesting reply but I don't believe that the following quote would hold up,

The person doesn't even have to reside in Florida, he could just be advertising on the Internet or something else which is read in Florida.
I take it you actually mean if the individual was advertising something in Florida (in this case.)

Don't agree with anyone misrepresenting themselves but the law in Florida would have no effect in say England, even if someone read it in Florida on the Internet.

    Default I dunno....

Historically, "professor" has been used as a title of respect and adress for jujutsu and judo instructors since the late nineteenth century, and by various aspects of the kenpo community in the twentieth. I don't know that any particular standard was used as far as whom it was applied to, but Yukio Tani and others were adressed as "Professor," perhaps as a weak english translation of "sensei," or, more likely, "shihan."

Wally Jay, Adriano Emperado, Reme Presas and many others are adressed as "professor"(often pronounced profesSORE, with an accent on the E at the end)as was Okazaki of Danzan Ryu Jujutsu....

As for the legal use of this word....Well, I'm not a lawyer, but it seems to me thatneither Ralph or any of these other teachers are claiming any academic degree by merely using this word in a way that others have.

Of course, if he's claiming it because he's taught at the university level, well.....
