    Default schools

Hello everyone, my name is Ray and I was just wondering if you could tell me if there are any dojos or schools that teach any of the sword arts in Alabama.I know of one that teaches iaido but you have to take aikido and then after about a year they may teach you some as part of higher instruction. If anyone knows and could tell me that would be great.

    Thanks

    Default Where in Alabama? ...

    Hi Ray,
I think that there are a couple of schools that teach Obata Toshishiro's Shinkendo. You have to go to their main page at www.shinkendo.com and click on authorized dojo.

    Good luck in your search,

Mr. Smith is correct; there are two Shinkendo affiliates in Alabama. Here is the info:

    Alabama
    Birmingham
    ISF-AL/GA: Birmingham Dojo
    507 Kenilworth Dr.
    Birmingham, AL 35209
    Paul Couch Hanshi
    Y. Matsuoka Kyoshi
    (205)879-2606 FAX/ph

    Fairhope
    ISF-AL/GA: Fairhope dojo
    10213 Longview Drive
    Foley, AL 36535
    Bob Payne Sensei
    (334) 955-2322 ph

Unfortunately the All US Kendo Federation list shows no affiliated Kendo or Iaido dojo in Alabama at this time.

A search at a Zen Nihon Iaido Renmei website was similarly unhelpful.

Good luck, and beware of imposters. A sword and a costume do not a sensei make.

    Smile There's here...

I'm sure exactly where you live in Alabama, but if your anywhere near Southern Alabama ie Atmore, Foley etc. then your not to far from our dojo here in Pensacola, where we have Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu under Jikinshinkai affiliation and Kendo under the All American Kendo Federation. 40 to 50 minute drive perhaps, but it's only a suggestion. Granted we are an Aikido school, but that doesn't restrict one from practicing just the sword arts should he/she choose to do so and not bothering with Aikido. There is I think a Mugai ryu dojo (don't qoute me on this) somewhere in Mobile too. Search around, talk to some folks. I'm sure you'll be able to find something. Best regards

Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu is one of the two most practiced Iaido forms in the world today, the other being Muso Shinden Ryu.

Both have the same root in fuedal Japan, the root being established by Hayashizaki Jinsuke Shigenobu, ca. 1542-1621.
MJER is an outgrowth of the Tanimura-ha, and MSR the Shimomura-ha.

If you can make it to this dojo, you should find it to be what you're looking for.

Scratch everything I just said in the above post; I was thinking of a different style. Hope I didn't confuse you.

The school mentioned in the link isn't MJER, of course. That's what I get for posting this late at night when I should be in bed.

Sensei Couch & Matsuoka are excellent representatives for Kaiso Obata, and have been teaching Shinkendo and Toyama Ryu for many years.

Hello, I don't know if I missed it before but there is a closed topic where obita sensei discusses shinkendo.I do not know if I missed it earlier or someone reposted it.However, it has helped a lot.

    Thanks
