Default Gozo Shioda and JFK's Bodyguard

I read a bit about Gozo Shioda doing a demonstration in Tokyo for John F. Kennedy and after the demonstration JFK apparently thoguth that it was very impressive but wondered how Shioda would do against his big bodyguards.

Shioda invited the bodyguards one at a time onto the mat and ended up perfoming yonkajo onone of them. I'm wondering if anyone has any links that I could check out to read more about this event and/or links to videos of the event.

I believe the video that shows this demonstration was entitled "Gozo Shioda: Kamiwaza Denju" but I can not find it anywhere.

    Thanks in advance,

Anyone aware of this video clip in avi or mpg format on the web? I'd love to see it but I really don't want to pay $50 US to see it.

Am I to assume that you saw the video of Gozo Shioda and it wans't that impressive? or did not show the bodyguard incident at all? or is there another reason for your sarcastic comment ?

It's fair to say that JFK's bodyguard and Gozo Shioda were not fighting. It was a demonstration and both men knew it.

I'm sure the big man felt the pain but it is not a source of awe and inspiration for the smaller man.

Just by nature I am less sarcastic than then the evil Mr. S. but the point is the same.

I never mentioned in my post that they were fighting. I just wanted to know if anyone has seen it and if it was available to view online.

I would think that if Gozo Shioda used yonkajo on the body guard and got him on the ground whether it was strictly a demonstration or a fight should not really matter. I'm sure the bodyguard would not go down just for the show aspect of it if the technique wasn't effective, a specially that he was the one on the ground being put down by a 108lb man in front of his boss and the president of the the US.

Don't sweat it Paul. I haven't seen the video, so I won't comment on that. But I have seen other video of GS, and he's quite excellent, in my opinion. The only fault I could honestly state is that there is a 'standard' demo that gets repeated a lot.

Mr. S is rather prickly...and GS is not his favorite aikidoka (I don't know that he has a favorite) and he has pointed out what he sees as flaws in the past. If you search on this forum you'll see what I mean. I don't agree...but hey, that's what these forums are for.

    Thanks Ron!

I have also seen quite a few Gozo Shioda demo clips and find him excellent. I will have to do a search to find out what flaws Mr. S. has found in GS's demos.

    Thanks again,

    LOL...

I need to stand in front of the mirror more myself...while doing basic movements, that is, not patting myself on the back.

I hope this thread isn't about me, please?

Recently I bought video "Yoshinkan aikido, Gozo Shioda 9 th dan" which includes two historical, professional 16 mm films shot in 1958 and 1962.

I was so excited to see Shioda sensei at his peak, unfortunately, after watching, I felt very big disappointment. In those years his technique wasn’t very good at all.

Few years ago Sensei was one of the best aikidoka for me. But more I learn about him, more I see his practice; I have more and more mixed feelings. In many ways he is second after O sensei (timing, changing ma ai, changing rhythm, understanding space around him…), still there are other things I don’t like very much.
