Default Who is the greatest bassist of all time?

Since we've got a 'Greatest Guitarists' thread I think it only proper if we salute the bassists of our time.

I was going to do a poll but I'm sure that there are so many opinions then it wouldn't be fair to just limit it to my first thoughts.

I'm going to pick a few for now...

James Jamerson - Mototown Funk Brothers, just amazing.
Flea - Personal Hero and technical brilliance.
Steve Harris - Iron Maiden, the triplet master.
John Entwistle - The Who, fastest casual player.

    Cheers

You are right there are far too many Bassists out there to make a poll out of.

One would be from Van Halen. He did a good bass solo on the live without a net video.

But then I would say Booo and gerrof to Steve Harris fron Iron bland-on.. oops Maiden. That guy went through 4 albums playing the same riff.

Another yay is that woman from Pig Bag that joined the Sisters of Mercy for the Floodland album .

Err and the bassist for Placebo. Another good one that plays well.

Bass guitars are for girls. Uprights are where it's at.

    My pick:

    Danny Thompson
    Charlie Haden
    Edgar Meyer
    Todd Phillips
    Charles Mingus

    Talking Bass guitars = overcompensation!

Mandolins are sexy, and chicks dig 'em.

Nicholas Cage would never have pulled if he'd been carting around a Fender Precision.

The smaller the instrument, the larger the instrument!

Definately Billy Sheehan. His stuff from Mr. Big is pretty watered down. Check out his early stuff from Talas. He does a solo called NV43345. It is wild. Most people are surprised it's a bass solo.

Niacin is some nice stuff and a good change of pace for Sheehan.

Michael Anthony is probably the perfect bassist for a band like Van Halen. I've played with Stanley Clarke wannabees and it can be nightmare. Somebody has to maintain a groove. Sheehan's stuff with Mr. Big wasn't really watered down. He just concentrated more on doing his job.

Surprised no one mentioned Bootsy Collins.

Stanley Clarke is a great electric bass player who does stand-up also.
