I was hoping all of you might be able to help me. I am looking for a Dojo near Hartford Connecticut. I tried google, but came up empty handed. Any help is appreciated.

You can find other kendo dojo in Southern New York or Massachusetts here:

These dojo may be a bit of a drive from Hartford, but I'm sure they'll be well worth the trip.
I hope this helps.

The dojo you listed are pretty far from Hartford, one about an hour the other about 80 minutes. All in all not that far compared to what some people travel for JSA training. I train Muso Shinden Ryu Iaido at Westside Aikido in West Springfield Ma, about 30 minutes north of Hartford right across the Ma state line. Send me a PM if you would like more information
Also, there is a guy in Manchester CT (about 15 minutes west of Hartrford) claiming to teach kenjutsu. Stay far far away from this place. The guy actually makes his students call him Shihan instead of sensei, and has no verifiable JSA training. He claims that during the late 60's and 70's he was a memnber os the US special forces. He was assigned to travel to Japan to learn all the martial arts (including kenjustu) he could so he could come back and train the rest of special forces with what he learned. Though for the life of me I cannot figure out what learning kenjutsu would have to do with teaching millitary hand to hand combat. Unless of course the special forces use the katana as a weapon and it is so top secrete no one knows about it.
I can also give you more specific info via PM.

I will second the fact that there is nothing in the immediate hartford area....I can also state that both the Stamford Dojo and the New Haven Dojo have excellent reputations. Having travelled from Hartford to NewHaven to train in Aikido for a number of years I can say it's not actually too bad. Stamford is a haul but maybe weekends?
hope this helps,

Hi there!
I found one more Kendo dojo in Conecticut.
There is a small Kendo group in Middletown, CT that I found out about from somebody, a couple months ago. I looked on a map to see where it is in relation to Hartford, and it is definately closer to you much more so than the New Haven dojo and the Stamfor dojo.
The sensei of the dojo in Middletown is Yoshihiro Yonekawa.
They practice at Wesleyan University, in Connecticut. This dojo does not have a webpage that I could find.
Contact: Yoshihiro Yonekawa - yyonekawa@wesleyan.edu
Phone at the school: (860) 685-7370
or, Justin Leroy - jleroy@wesleyan.edu
Phone at the school: (860) 685-4696
You can also call Daniel Zoot for more information about contacting Yonekawa-sensei.
Daniel Zoot: 508-490-1628
e-mail: danielzoot@earthlink.net
It took me about an hour to hunt down these contact e-mails and numbers, which I finally found at the Wesleyan University website by searching all over, there. The person who told me about this dojo didn't have any other info other than the name of it and where. So, for more information on the location and practice times, try to contact Yonekawa-sensei, and if you can't get a hold of him, then please call Daniel Zoot-sensei.
Well, I hope this helps you!
Good luck!

Thank you everyone. your help is appreciated.

So I guess I'm not the only one looking for a school near Hartford. I hope the info on this page is still valid. In 2004 I was just a young lad fresh out of high school.
Thanks for the info!
I also recommend looking through this somewhat recent thread: Iaido in Massachusetts?.

Then might I respectfully suggest that you're SOL? To find a legitimate instructor of the Japanese sword arts within walking distance would defy tremendous odds. You'll need to either A) buy a car to commute to a dojo, or B) Move somewhere that has a dojo within walking distance.I probably should have mentioned this earlier but I don't own a car ...
As an indicator of the odds that I talk about ... there are 6.5 million people currently living in the DFW area of Texas where I live. There are exactly 5 (mostly) legitimate instructors of the Japanese sword arts, and two of them are technically outside the metroplex.
