I ran across this page and was wondering if anyone knew anything about this group claiming to teach Shinkage ryu.
Shinkage?
Since it is on my list of arts to get a taste of, I would like to know if it is legitimate.

I don't know any of them personally. I have heard from someone, who's opinion I trust, that has watched their demos before. To say he was unimpressed would be a vast understatement.

Hmm...there isn't a whole lot of information about their martial art on this website. I also wonder if *all* students - including beginners - use a shinken for iai. Yes, I think it is better to train with a "live" blade. But for those who are just starting, it may not be a very good idea, because of the injury risk from mistakes.

Just from looking at the kamae on the photos and the lack of history details and where the instructors recieved their tuition, it raises several red flags.

Is this legitimate Shinkage?
Probably not. A legitimate koryu wouldn't make a laughing stock of itself by introducing armoured keiko without even knowing how to wear the armour correctly. Anyone else noticed the tare/do interface?
Donkeys.
A quick Google Search throws up nothing but tameshigiri pictures. Does this reinforce the possibility of them being nothing more than a bunch of berks who like doing cutting in public to look cool?

Notice in the photos they have tasuki too. Only they are using them with keikogi, not kimono. Yep, sure sign of not knowing what's going on, at least in my book.
Looks like an attempt to copy Owari Kan-ryu Sojutsu's training methods.Originally Posted by ScottUK

Ooooooo! ....
Maybe they're part of Benson's group?
Gotta love a school that demo's at anime conventions, wears tasuke with their dogi, and displays wonderful pictures of missing the target?
(It moved! I swear it jumped out of the way!)

Heh..You mean....
Authentic, original Shinkage Ryu from China? Wow...Never thought I would see it...And that Sojutsu..Wow...So formidable..
Damn interesting.

My guess..
No way. Shinkage, at least Yagyu Shinkage-ryu no longer has spear in the curriculum. Only branch -I- know of with a spear and other polearms is the Hikita Shinkage-ryu ala Hunter B. Armstrong.
Very first picture, no kamae I've ever seen. Doo rags.. ehh.
Also, no mention of lineage is sketchy. And most YSR / SR people have heard of eachother..
We shall see.

The posture and grip of the dude in the naginata pics is "interesting". I did a little naginata [and I mean a little ]. Even I've got better kamae than that and that's bad!

That's Owari Kan-ryu. Kan-ryu, headed by Kato Isao, specialize in the kuda yari, which is a spear with a metal collar to allow for quick thrusts and retractions. They also train in Yagyu Shinkage-ryu & Hikita-ryu (AKA: Hikita Shinkage-ryu)Originally Posted by Alex Dale
Who wants to email them and invite them to our discussion? Otherwise, this should be moved to 'badass budo'...
