Thread: Moved threads

  1. #1

    Post

    An idea:

When a thread is moved, it would be helpful to include a notice of where the thread has moved in the thread's original place.

The thread "ideal resource" that I created was recently moved and I thought that it had disappeared until I checked my email. Luckily, in my inbox I found a response notification from a message within that thread [at the thread's new URL]. I have recently changed my notification email address, but apparently the mail I received [to the old account] was sent to before I change the address in my e-budo profile.

If anyone else had wanted to see/reply to the original, they would most likely have thought [as did I, at first] that the thread had been deleted. I had no knowledge of a "Research Methods" section prior to receiving that fortuitous notification mail, and I had actually looked into other threads to try to find where mine could have been moved.

The Member’s Lounge is intended for the posting of off topic messages or just chit chat. Messages that should have been posted in a more appropriate forum will be moved there without notification to the original poster. Thus, please take the time to evaluate your message in regards to content and post it in the appropriate forum.
This is posted in the forum, from which your post was moved... Hm, i have to admit this was posted only recently...

The point is that when posts/threads are moved, they are often difficult to find. A posted notification of where the post or thread has been moved would be very helpful, and would help those who otherwise would find it a waste of time to hunt for lost posts/threads.

The more times a person needs to click and search to find what he or she is looking for, the more likely he/she will give up. What I am suggesting is a direct link to the appropriate location to which a post or thread has been moved.

    A simpler explanation:

    Question: which is more direct?

    Scenario 1.

Link to thread disappears --> user has to search e-budo to find it.

    Scenario 2.

Link to thread is replaced with a reference [link] to the appropriate location to which the thread has been moved --> user clicks on the link and obtains the desired information.
    ----

The answer is "Scenario 2". It takes a bit more work for the moderator, but increases usability [ease of use] of the message board for the user.

    I disagree...

For one if a threat was moved, than it was obviously not in the right place... So it already caused the administrator unecessary work (if people would play a bit more attention before posting this would not even be a problem...).

Also, it is NOT hard at all to find your own threat... e.g. If you do not keep your name cloaked, you can easily click on your name on the bottom of the forums... It shows your bio and your LAST post (with location). Also the search function is very easy to locate any person or subject without problems... I see no reason why there should be more work pushed on the administrator... I think ebudo is the most userfriendly board out there... I do not see a need to make it idiotsafe...

I do try and send a PM if I have time. Since I do this at work as well, I often only have time to move it. Yes, it really shouldn't be too hard to find the message by doing a search or just thinking about where it might have moved to .

    Thumbs up

    I see your point, John.

If the message board gives the option of "cloaking", it should be expected that people will take that option. And if users take the option [like me], the user should still have access to the same features as those without the option. That is a basic concept in usability. A preference that is offered to the user shouldn't interfere with the user's ability to interact with the software.

As for "idiot-proofing", the worst idea for an application developer to have is to assume that the user is knowedgeable about the application beforehand. To say that "he/she should have known" is no excuse for creating software that lacks in proper features and notification.

Ease of use is an especially important concern when developing web applications because users will not be willing to sit for an hour and read a manual about how to use your web site. If you confuse the user, he/she will leave. The internet is too vast to play the "should have/could have/would have" game, because users can [and will] just go elsewhere.

I suppose losing users isn't such a problem for a non-profit message board, but doing a little extra work [just sending a single-line notification email is fine] will be worth it. You will have done your job better, and the user will have more time to do what they came here for in the first place: read and write messages, not decipher features and comprehend interfaces.

I'll definitely use the search function in the future. I suggested the notification of moved threads to be used at the moderator's discretion, of course. In the example of my recent incident, I was told that the thread was fine where it was, and then it was moved. Without ample notification, it would seem to have been deleted. If it is e-budo policy to PM the user who created the thread, however, then I see no problem.

You're doing a great job, John. This is definitely the highest-quality message board that I've seen regarding martial arts. Keep looking up and things will only get better!
