In case you didn't know, there is a newsgroup posting martial art DVDs and books. Most of it seems to be copyrighted material, and thus I have a bit of a moral issue with even posting this message. But, like a lot of the newsgroups, copyright violations are common.

The question I have is in regards to who actually controls newsgroups? They are one of the oldest parts of the interent, but have seemed to bypass attempts to regulate their content. Some people may not even know about Newsgroups.

    Aah, newsgroups. I remember them.

Before the www, they were the only place to find pr0n.

Who controls them? Who controls anything on the internet?

    From usenet faq:

"No person or group has authority over Usenet as a whole. No one
controls who gets a news feed, which articles are propagated
where, who can post articles, or anything else. There is no
"Usenet Incorporated," nor is there a "Usenet User's Group."
    You're on your own."

"Property rights being what they are, there is no higher authority on
Usenet than the people who own the machines on which Usenet traffic is
    carried."

I guess that means when it comes to it, its the people who own the servers are the ones who will ultimately be responsible.

pr0n, lol! a.b.p.e.f, mget and uudecode anyone? "Back when I was young, we had to WORK for our pr0n. We only had one web-browser called lynx and it was only text. Not there there were any web-pages to 'surf' to on our 14.4k dial-up 486's anyways. And don't get me started about BBSs! FLIBBLE-DEE-FLOO."

As far as I can remember, a lot were hosted by university servers, which were about the only non-commercial systems hooked up to fast trunk lines. Some had moderators, but they didn't always maintain the systems and hardware by default.
