    Default Torn ACL and more...

Ok, I know that the torn ACL has been hashed out before but, I have raised the bar in knee injuries… I have managed to disrupt (completely torn free) my ACL, Grade IV tear my articular cartilage right where all the weight is being distributed, tore the minscus (again). Anyone had this kind of damage? If so what did you do to correct it? Were you able to train? (I try to do Iaido and Shorin-ryu ). Any feed back would help.

    Damn Todd
    Sorry to hear that.
I wish I could give you some advice except go see a specialist. I think that would be your best bet. I had a torn cartilage and tried to live with it, to no avail. I had arthroscopic surgery and it was the best thing I've done.
    Good luck.

    Tony,

Thanks... I see the surgeon in the morning. I had the arthroscopic surgery 3 years ago (I guess I hate my right knee) on the same knee. I just kind of want a heads up to see if anyone else has done this or close and what the outcome was... so far my GP said it might be a new joint (oh god I hope not). Should hear more on that tomarrow. I have not been to the dojo in 3 weeks and it's killing me.

I dont mean to be rude, but if you bust ACL's on a regular basis, maybe you should adapt things a little? Depends how you bust it of course....

    Default 2 suyrgeries in ' 04

    hey like the Tony ;
for the carthlidge- i had the scope done ,But 20 yrs.
    after the injury.
the reason for that surgery was due to a 2002 ACL tear which affected every part of my normal activities.
so, i had one scoped & 3 months later
had reconstructive on my other knee.

    i jog , referee basketball , ride horses & train at @ 80 % capability.
    leg lifts - isometric tension - bicycle - & - NOW
stair stepping are my primary workouts .
i plan to return to (construction )work
    in Feb.
    2yrs. after my 1st surgery.

    Unhappy Ouchies.

I don't have anything constructive to add, but as a fellow member of the "long-gone ACL club", I wanted to offer my sympathy.

Find a good sports doctor, don't skimp on any phyisio, and don't rush back into training.

    Get well soon!
    Cheers,

    Default Blind Technique

I recently blew out my ACL, tore (and flipped over) the miniscus in a tournament (kumite of course). This is my first and hopefully my last.

When I attacked, my opponent turned his back on me and threw a blind back kick low to my knee (I have witnesses!). This was a closed Isshinryu tournament in November and they let in a non-okinawan stylist for kumite. I need not mention the style, but he could certainly qualify for that worst "do-gi" list. This was the BB Mens over 35 division - all the balding middle aged guys

So, at the age of 40, my wife is inisting that I stop kumite in tournaments. She wants me to focus on the "arts" and less on the "martial". She also was successful in convincing me to discontinue skydiving when my son was born. I think I would be dead already without her "reality check". We will see though...

After several weeks I am back in a GI with a heavy leg brace doing light kata only, mainly sai. I tried sitting on the side lines but just couldn't take it anymore. I am going into surgery first week of February.

Advise: Find a great orthapedic surgeon (sports), and do everything he tells you to do. Good luck.

    Default Update

Just, an update to those whom are interested. I went to the orthopedic surgeon again yesterday. As it turns out that the damage will not require surgery at this time. I’ll have to do physical therapy first for a month and go in for re-evaluation. The main thing he said to look out for is sudden turns on that knee especially with the knee extended. Sparing will be out for a while also. I’ll have to see how it affects things… Rehab for the surgery is crazy like 6-9 months before the knee returns to “normal.”
