Hey guys I'm thinking to take up Iaido and I'm wondering if any of you had any experience with the JCCC (Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre)? Check out the website and tell me what you think.

Search the forum archives for Ohmi. I think you'll find he has a very good reputation. It's a good oppurtunity. I'd say go for it.

I don't know any specifics about your center in Toronto, but similar groups in Seattle and other cities with large Japanese populations usually open their centers to teachers of various disciplines, but don't directly control the classes. Nonetheless, the quality of instruction is usually pretty good, and the variety of programs -- from martial arts to calligraphy to cooking -- is great.
If you want to take up the sword, though, there may be other options. How far is Guelph from where you live?

I should have read the JCCC page. I didn't know they gave the teacher's name.Originally Posted by Charles Mahan

Ohmi-sensei is one of the top couple of iaido instructors in Canada, and a really good guy. I think you'll enjoy training under him. The kendo at JCCC is also top-notch. Don't fret in the slightest.

Mr. Tareen, you can set it up so that your name appears in your signature (user cp > edit signature), that way you don't have to remember to type your name everytime.Originally Posted by Jrock

I also really like the photography. The use of a slow shutter speed to blur motion, combined with use of a tripod for sharp backgrounds is excellent, and not easy to get right.
(Time for me to break out the tripod and start practicing, if I want to get results like theirs.)

I agree completely. I have had the pleasure of working with him over the years at seminars in Ontario. I envy you having the opportunity of regular practice. His assistants are well honed too.Originally Posted by gendzwil

The very first picture has Ohmi-sensei in the foreground, in bogu - you can see his nafuda (name-tag).

What's funny about that list of pictures is that none of them actually show the dojo room that we train in :P (it's behind that Judo/Aikido room)
Also, beginners are separated for the first few classes to learn basics like kamae, cuts and etiquette...I've never been impressed by the "sink or swim" approach to learning, so this was a great way to ease into the art...
Just remember to bring comfortable kneepads to the first class.
