Japaness writing of the weapons

Hello,

I've got a question of the writing of the weapon in japaness.
For Bo, Sai, Kama and Tekko there is used a kanji for the writing. But for Tonfa, Nunachaku, Sai, Ekku and Tinbe you use katakana? How does it come?

I just thought katakan would be used for foreign words. Has anbody an explaination for the writtings?

I believe that the general reason is that for some weapons there are recognized and accepted kanji for them. While for the other weapons, there are multiple kanji with the same pronunciation, hence the use of kana.

I would argue that the kanji for the following are fairly standard:
bo　棒
kon　棍
kama　鎌

While the following weapons can have multiple kanji or pronunciations
nunchaku　粘着　ヌンチャク　
tonfa　転破　トンファー
tekko　手甲　テッコウ
sai 釵　サイ
