Can anyone tell who these two karate-ka are ? Thanks.
I saw this picture in a small book about the Kyudokan (Higa sensei's group). I also see this picture on the mainpage of http://www.okinawakaratedo.com/ in the top row of pictures.
Perhaps Tim Black from the Kokusai Shinjimbukan would know their names he's on this board.
Hope this helps (a little anyway).

There is a drawing of Shinko Matayoshi in Bishop's book that looks a lot like the person on the left.

Did it have a caption as to whom the people were ?Originally Posted by Blackwood

I don't believe that is Matayoshi sensei.
My guess is that it is Higa sensei on the left, but it hard to tell from his profile and he looks very young there. I have no idea who the figure on the right is.

I just checked with my teacher and he verified that the person on the left is Higa Yuchoku Sensei. Not sure about the person on the left.Originally Posted by bakaboy

According to the information in the Kyudokan Book, published for Yuchoku sensei's memorial, this picture was taken circa 1936 at the Miyagi Chojun dojo. Higa Yuchoku on the left age 26 and Tokashiki "Tadaaki" age 30 on the right.
I suspect there might be a more common reading for Mr. Tokashiki's given name, but this is the best I could do, translating Okinawan names is not an easy task. Here is his name in kanji 渡嘉敷唯明 if anybody has an alternate ready let me know. Or if anyone knows more about Mr. Tokashiki it would be interesting to hear about him.

And they were announcing the Oscar nominee's. So, the picture made me thing of the Asian version of Brokeback Mountain. Sorry about that

Thanks Mitch, you just reminded me why I tend not to post. I'll go back to lurking now.

Hi Dan:
Nice to see your post. Okinawan first names are difficult to say the least. They usually rely on On-yomi, so an uneducated guess would be Imei - but I reserve the right to be 100% wrong
Cheers,
Imei was an option I considered, and I suspect might have been the original Okinawan reading (particularly at the time the picture was taken), but I found (online) several instances of the name pronounced "Tadaaki", and in fact a noted Univ Prof, with the exact name “Tokashiki Tadaaki” so I arbitrarily decided to go with the modern reading. I also won't be surprised if I am completely wrong on this.
So until somebody can tell us definitively, let’s say the gentleman’s name is Tokashiki Imei “Tadaashi”.
Now that we’ve given him a name, has anybody ever heard of him? Was he a student of Chojun sensei or was he a training partner of Yuchoku sensei at Shinzato dojo?

To avoid confusion, what I meant to type was Tokashiki Imei “Tadaaki”.
