Thumbs up Habu Sake ... Snake in a Bottle

While researching an article on "forbidden drinks" for a friend, I came a cross a great "Stars and Stripes" article about the uniquely Okinawan drink called "Habu Sake". Awamori in general is wonderful, the habu version will knock one on one's keister.

    Enjoy!

    Doug,

Thanks for that. I certainly enjoyed Awamori while I was there, but I never got up the nerve to try the Habu version.

I have drank some and even made a bottle with my teacher. It really tastes like there is a dead animal in the bottom of your drink.

I tried this when i was in Japan. The stuff that I tried was pretty good actually. Potent though. I only did a coupla shots, some of my friends did more and it really floored them.

On a side note there is a Korean version of this using a cobra and soju.

A korean liquor distilled from rice. It is generally clear with very little taste, which is what makes it deadly. You can mix it with stuff and hardly tast it.

Japanese pronunciation is Shochu. I think it's Habu Shochu they are showing, not sake. The Japanese preferred drink is shochu not sake. Distilled from rice, wheat, or potatoes they drink it with hot water. Personally I prefer Jinro Korean Soju.

Try fresh Suppon blood in sake for something different.

Shochu is the liquour specific to Kyushu, the southernmost of the four main islands of Japan. Generally brewed from barley these days, there are also varieties made from rice, a blend of barley and rice, and a potato type too. It's origins are in Korea, and that version is know as Soju (generally a rice/barley blend). More info to be found at the excellent SakeWorld.com.

As an aside, mainland Japan has a drink, mamushi-shu, which is a different kind of venemous snake in shochu.

oooh this sounds exotic. the wife and i are going to okinawa next year to visit her friend who married an okinawan guy. i'll have to insist on trying it. she loves awamori, so it should not be too difficult.
