    Default Is WinMX dead?

Not according to Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WinMX and the WinMX fan group . It seems WinMX has a cult following and a decentralized P2P network.

since the demise of WinMX, other P2P networks have either taken heed and gone legal or have just shut up shop and left the users without a network. But there is the WinMX group that is holding out. From out of nowhere there is a patch to use the UDP connections.

Maybe it is just me, but I have been trying to get it connected with the patch and an open firewall setting and nothing. It would seem the group which has a following of maybe.... tens of people, still wish to use WinMX and get it back to the days of 2002 when it was the most used P2P in North America. The most traffice was back then and it was the most widely used, spyware free application on the net. But since September 2005 and the FIAA told WinMX to get legal or face closure, the fans want it to remain.

WinMX had it all, the music which was illegal, the videos, which were also illegal and the porn... Illegal but downloadable. Even the .exe files of the Sims were out there ready to play. It had it all, and then some. Now it has the yellow bar trying to connect you to some computer that is, or could be, out there.

WinMX is where I got all my music from. And a few ninjutsu videos as well. It wasa good dource of entertainment, porn, music, porn, films, porn, pictures, porn and did I mention the copious ammounts of porn?

Well it has been trying to connect for 20 minutes and like SETI, it has found nothing so far. So it seems that the great WinMX has bitten the dust. It knows what del *.* does in dos. The network is dead. It has come to do the Monty Python's Norweigen Blue parrot sketch.

So long may the faithful keep trying to keep WinMX alive, for we know it is a futile task. So let us raise a sake glass to the futility of their uncompromising resolve to keep the horse flogged well after the flesh has gone.

Time to get Bearshare a go. It was fun while it lasted, but the faithful have a losing battle ahead of them.

    Switch to emule.

I went from Kazaa to Winmx to bearshare to emule. So far I really like emule, it's not the fastest system, but as my system is on 24/7 that doesn't really matter.

The good thing about emule (and related systems) is that there are plenty of sites that offer very up to date and reliable ed2k links.

Try it and see if you like it.

the new buzzword now is Bittorrent P2P. Only thing is that you download all in the site and get useless information along with what you get. I suppose downloading from websites does have a bonus though.

I don't really like BT. It's very nice for new files, but older files are hard to get with BT. I prefer the slower, more reliable solution..... emule

Especially if you're going for full DVD-R, then you're looking at files of around 4.2 GB. Not much use doing that through BT.

From what I understand, WinMX servers are down. I personally use limewire pro due to it's fast connection. I have not used emule and I use BT for games.

One that I used recently was Ares P2P. It seems to want to find connections and when it does, it's as slow as a 32 bit supercomputer processor.

But I find it hard to see why anyone would want to use WinMX when the central servers are down. Smacks of stupidity.

From my experience whenever a client (or their kids)
installs one of there p2p programs I get a call shortly
after to remove the pests that get into their system.

One client had over 3000 in one computer alone.

I remember a friend of mine installed kazaa and set the
program not to share anything but when he tested it
he was able to find everything including emails.

    much bad mojo
