    Default FAQ 6/5/06

This is a work in progress and always will be. Please submit additions by email or PM.

1). Is this a Bujinkan or a Genbukan forum?

Neither. This forum is for open discussion between those involved in the arts passed down from Takamatsu sensei. We mostly stay away from the neo or independant groups as quite a few of them make unsubstantiated claims and/or have no link to a Japanese instructor. This does mean they are necessarily bad in anyway, but as this is a forum for 'Japanese Martial Arts' they simply don't fall under the same category. Many of our members are into looking both inside and outside the box in their individual journeys. There are some individuals that would like you to only think and be a certain way that they have defined for themselves. This is not the best place for those that think that way. We sometimes disagree with one another quite intensely. There are other places to participate if you do not like what goes on here. Some of those others places are listed below.

2). What is the difference between Jinenkan, Bujinkan, and Genbukan?

There are various answers to this. Primarily it is about the approach to teaching that each kan takes. For more information you can search our archives or check out the individual sites:

    http://jinenkan.com/
    http://www.genbukan.org/
    http://www.bujinkan.com/

3). Is Stephen Hayes still part of the Bujinkan? What is he doing these days?

    Please view his website at:

    http://www.skhquest.com

4). I read an article at koryu.com that seemed to say Ninjutsu was not real and that Hatsumi sensei could not be validated. Whats up with this?

This has been discussed more than once. Please search our archives before posting your 'discovery'. There have been some excellent posts made on this in the past so you should be able to find more than enough to satisfy your curiousity.

5). Can I discuss Ashida Kim, Frank Dux, Tew Ryu, or other such individuals here?

No. Discussions about these individuals will be moved to baffling budo. Even though some of these individuals may have excellent skills at whatever they do, they are not recognized as being valid 'ninpo or ninjutsu' practitioners on this forum.

6). Can I learn how to make cool ninja weapons/bombs/poisons here?

No. Please do not even bother to ask. Many of our members are not very patient with this type of query posed on the internet. You will very likely be answered with sarcasm and/or insult before I have time to remove the thread

7). What is up with ranking in the Bujinkan? Also what are the 11th - 15th dan ranks all about?

There is a nice section on ranking on Dale Seagos FAQ from his website. You can view that at http://www.bujinkansf.org/faq/#ranks.

There's also a mention of "11th-15th" dan not being "higher" ranks as such but ranks within 10th dan.

    Judan = 10th dan
    Judan Chi-i Happo Biken (Earth) = 10th dan Earth = "11th dan"
    Judan Sui-i Happo Biken (Water) = 10th dan Water = "12th dan"
    Judan Ka-i Happo Biken (Fire) = 10th dan Fire = "13th dan"
    Judan Fu-i Happo Biken (Wind) = 10th dan Wind = "14th dan"
    Judan Ku-i Happo Biken (Void) = 10th dan Void = "15th dan"

As was mentioned before, the 11 through 15 thing's been adopted by westerners either out of convenience or affectation.

*Thanks William for providing the info!

    8). Where can I find a dojo?

There are many sources on the web for finding a dojo in your area. The following is a small list of resources to get you started.

    http://www.winjutsu.com/winlinks.html
    http://www.skhquest.com/schools/default.aspx
    http://www.ninjutsu.com/dojos-links.shtml
    http://www.genbukan.org
    http://jinenkan.com/en/Default.htm

9). Can I train in the Bujinkan and the Genbukan/Jinenkan?

Hatsumi sensei has made the request that Bujinkan members not train with the other Kans. Technically you can do whatever you want really, but keep in mind you are going against the wishes of the Bujinkan Soke if you do so. From what I have heard time and time again it is more a matter of vastly different directions than anything else. Sometimes when you involve yourself with an organization there are certain guidelines and requests that you are expected to follow. This is just one of the those in the Bujinkan.

10). Whats up with 'koga ryu'?

Here are a couple of articles on koga ryu. As of now we at E-Budo know of no authentic (meaning can demonstrate/trace their lineages to a Japanese instructor) current koga ryu instructors.

    Default Ninpo in MMA

This is in reply partly to a question raised on the Genbukan Honbu Forum, partly in response to many questions I have been personally asked, and also questions I have seen on forums in general. I post it here with the intention that it may help answer some of these questions that well intentioned people ask.

It is only my opinion, it is not my intention to offend others with differing opinions. I do not claim to be "right" but this is how I feel.

    Offered in that spirit:
