Umm, doesn't the obi/belt tell the "viewer" what the person is, student, jr. blackbelt, Sensei, etc? Why does one need a patch to tell others what they are? Never could understand this...

Personally, I've never understood the need for anyone outside of the organization to know who or what you are. It's none of their business in my opinion. Of course, children love to have things to seperate them from the crowd, so any personalization that they can earn is probably as good thing.
By the way, what is a Hasumi Ryu Kendo?
