Hakama and Obi

I saw once on the web pictures of a jujutsu school (sorry, can't remember the name...). They were training wearing hakama and colored obi tied ON the hakama (and not under as usual...)

Does someone know if it's a common thing to tie obi upon the hakama himo ?

Not common at all, but there are a few ryu that do so. I know of one jujutsu system and one sword system that do it, and of course there may be some that I'm not familiar with.

I wonder in fact if they have obi both under and upon...
and why they use colored obi...

in naginata engi contest, they also did, but in order to make difference between teams... (does that mean they also did contests ?)

I have studied Hakkoryu in Japan and I am a practitioner.
Hakkoryu does in fact wear obi on the exterior of their obi.
We do not wear obi under the hakama for the most part but there is an obi that can be worn under the hakama to draw thing up snugly under the hakama but it would not have anything to do with ranking belts.
My former sensei and shidoshi employed these “under " obi but it again had nothing to do with status or ryu.

Tamiya Ryu ??? No definately not. Well not the authentic Tamiya as through to the Tsumaki line.
