Question Dojo in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

    Greetings,

Could any of you make some recommendations on Dojos in the Toronto area for a good friend of mine? He has studied Okinawin Gojo Ryu Karate and has obtained a Nidan but had to stop training due to relocation to Toronto for School. He is looking to get back into the Martial Arts and is open to anything along the lines of Traditional Japanese Martial Arts. Something with a lineage connection and Honbu Dojo in Japan would be ideal.

Please advise. Your help is greatly appreciated.

    Warmest Regards
    Bryn Jones

    HI.

Since he was open to other budo than karate I can recommend Shorinjikempo in Toronto.
The instructor is a very good friend of mine and it is very good people in that dojo.

There are some other Shorinjikempo branches in Ontario as well and you can find info on them here.

    Thanks Anders,

The Shorinji Kempo Group in Toronto was one of the first groups I suggested he checks out as I've heard quite a few good things about them. I've seen some Shorinji Kempo demonstrations but have very little familiarity with the art so I wasn't sure if this would be a good fit. I will let him know of your recommendation.

    Thanks for your help.

He could do worse than the JCCC, which offers classes in judo, aikido, kendo, shito-ryu karate, shorinji kempo and naginata. More information here (caution, over 9 MB pdf).

Toronto? There should be an excellent yoshinkan aikido dojo there under Kimeda Sensei.

In speaking to Wagner Sensei last night he told me that Kimeda Sensei has 3 locations going, at last remembered. Hamilton, and 2 in Toronto. 1 at the U of T.

As for Goju, I have a friend that does some teaching in Ajax and in the beaches area. I may be wrong but I think he does some work with Patrice Williams Sensei, his name is Mark DeQuetteville. I've known him for 25 years and he is a great guy.

Well I can encourage my own club I guess.

There is the shito ryu itosu kai honbu at 3751 Bloor St. West, the website: Shito ryu

There are also classes at the JCCC (japanese canadian culture center) on the other end of toronto.

Very traditional if he wants to give it a try.

    Thumbs up Toronto goju instructors

Sensei Patrice Williams and the CMAC organization got some bad press a few years back involving a dojo storming. Do a seach on "long awaited court case" in the bad budo section.

That being said, the only CMAC sensei that I know is Martin O'Connell, who runs the High Park Dojo. I trained there until 2nd kyu, and only had good experiences.

Many years ago I trained with Bill Hind at Main and Danforth. Again, I only have good things to say.

Now I train with Sensei Mark Da Zilva up in Downswiew.

All of these three are Goju stylists. Flip me a PM if you want an introduction. I still have friends at High Park who could show you around. Or I could arrange a visit to my current dojo. It's up to you.

If you havent found a Dojo yet, my Sensei is in Scarborough. Vern Tilley Sensei, 8th dan. He is incharge of the style of Shorin Ryu for North America. Our hombu dojo is in Okinawa, under Taba Sensei 10th dan (he was Nagaminie's top student).

search Shogen-Ryu in google, or look up Tilley's Karate in Scarborough.

    Take care,

I trained at a club called Clasical Martial Arts in London Ontairio which teaches Meibukan Goju Ryu. The Sensei is Brian Robb and he is a member of this board but to my knowledge he has never posted.

    I don't think they have a website.

better advice would be to stay far away from CMAC. Read the stories and figure it out for yourself. Why are so many senior students leaving so fast?

Default Hey Monster, I'll save the mods the trouble

There's a local rule about signing all posts with your full name. And your real name too.

Now I don't disagree that CMAC ha a reputation for having a checkered past. I've had no issue with a former sensei at one dojo, but I've heard that the rest of the organization appears to be a rogues gallery.

Even if you're correct, you need to let us know who you are or else it just "isn't cricket".
