    Default Ukemi - Flip over

Hi Guys, I'm not an Aikido Guy, Im into Jujutsu but I have a question for you.

Do you have a name for the Flip Over Breakfall?

I mean there is: Mae Ukemi, Yoko Ukemi etc but I found no name for the flip over.

I couldent even find the word flip in japanese romaji launguage!

    Thanks in advance.

I believe the term is Zenpo Kaiten Ukemi (although I don't do aikido and my Judo days are long behind me now).

One possibility might be tobiukemi -- 飛び受け身 -- tobi having to do with jumping/flying/bouncing etc.

Yup. In my experience, it's just referred to as "mae ni tobu" (jump forward), "tobiukemi" or "tobu ukemi".

I thought tobiukemi specifically referred to what you do when thrown by Toby Threadgill. Maybe I'm confused.

I grew up hearing this type of fall called a "sutemi fall" or sute ukemi. It doesn't make sense to me to be making decisions about jumping when I don't know where to jump or when... It does make sense to me to relax in good posture and let my body go where gravity is taking it. The support leg thrusts making the center rise when our brain is deciding to try to get that support leg into a better position to support us, and when that happens when our head is going down, our support leg pushes strongly causing our body out and over rotating around in a zenpo kaiten movement in the air. Hence the name giving the idea of "sacrificing" our sense of safety, control, ability to choose and letting go to allow the inevititable to happen.

Yeah...what Sebastien and Ron and Chuck said...

    In the Yoshinkan:
Forward roll = Zenpo Kaiten Ukemi
Forward jumping roll = Zenpo Hiyaku Ukemi

    Incidently,

飛躍 - hiyaku - jump or leap.

Notice the same kanji for "hi" as the "tobu" that Google prefers for ukemi.

Out of interest, I have always understood that the origin of sutemi was not uke sacrificing himself, but tori sacrificing the standing position when it became untenable. In other words a sutemi nage was a last attempt to control the situation when tori was so unbalanced that all attempts to stay upright would result in greater kuzushi.

So, as an afterthought, why wouldn't the ukemi also be called sutemi?
I've just never heard it used for ukemi only for nagewaza
