    Default Ryukyu Kempo Training Videos

about 1 month ago I typed in "Ryukyu Kempo" in the Youtube and Google video sites and was upset on how many Dillman crap that was out there. In an effort to battle the forces of bad information that represents Oyata's Style I compiled 2 videos and posted them on Youtube.

The first shows Naihanch Shodan, some groud training drills from techniques in Naihanchi Shodan and bag training in preperations for Bogu Kumite:

The second shows some comedy regarding A LOT of karate systems are pumping out now and then shows some Kata, Bunkai from those kata, Yakusoku Kumite, and some recent Bogu Kumite fights that my group had in 2006:

Enjoy and all criticisms are welcomed!

    My best,

    Raul,

Nice videos, our training is similar. Coming from another style similar to yours, I wonder how you teach a more eclectic method of training (i.e. BJJ, muay thai, etc.) *and* traditional ryukyu kenpo? I am interested to hear your thoughts on how a typical class goes for your dojo. Do you teach everything together, have separate classes for jiu jitsu, or what? Do you have any issues with the different styles of fighting (bunkai vs. free fighting)?

For me, I teach everything together and so far it seems to be going ok, so I am just opening a dialogue with you about it...

Good work, you look like a very well-rounded karateka.

    Hey John,

We teach the Ryukyu Kempo curriculum - 12 kata, 10 yakusoku kumite as devised by Albert Geraldi (hachidan), and tuite jitsu. Each belt level has specific requirements based on those elements.

The bag work, bogu kumite, and partner drills is where it is all at for me. That is where we practice practical combos, ground drills, and mixing it up in light contact and hard contact sparring.

They learn the concepts through the kata, yakusoku kumite, and tuite jitsu.

They learn to fight in all ranges with bags, training drills, and sparring. All techniques (be it stand up or ground) are found in the kata principles. So we've never added anything new. Just trained it a different way. Cause it is not what you know, it is how you train what you know.

We've been trying to dedicate 1-2 nights a week in just the ground range. But time and current instructor injuries has been a factor lately.

Thanks for a nice explanation. We are similar in that we use kata to underline principles that can be applied to all ranges of fighting...interesting stuff! Thanks!

    Raul,
Thanks for the video (couldn't get the second one to load). Gave me a few new ideas and refreshed some techniques I had forgotten over the years.
