It appears that it is now necessary to create a forum id and log in order to even view the forums now. Was this done on purpose and if so why?

I don't think that's it. Log out and try to view the forums. Go straight to http://www.e-budo.com and try to find the forum index. It's not possible anymore unless you log in and I'm pretty sure that's a relatively new behaviour.
Here's an example. Try copying the url for this page http://www.e-budo.com/forum/showthread.php?t=37524 the log out and paste it into your browser's url. You won't be able to even view this thread without loggin into the forum, which means you must create a new account if you don't already have one.
I'm not sure if this is an intentional behaviour or an accident. It means that surfers who put in search terms in google and find an ebudo thread in the search results will not be able to read that thread. It basically shuts down ebudo to all outside readers. Was it really the goal to close the doors to everyone who isn't already in the club?

Only registered members can view the forums for now.
New registrations are turned off for now.
All this is for some upgrades, house cleaning, and other stuff.

Any rough timescales in when new users can join? I pointed an Aussie on a local forum here to look for a dojo.
