    Default Neko Ryu Goshin Jitsu

    Hi

Founf the following @ http://www.bohans-family.com/Events/...tes/cates1.htm and wodered if anyone knew any more about the course or Nakabiyashi Sensei?

Neko Ryu Goshin Jitsu translates to "Cat Style Self Defense". The concept originated with Nakabiyashi Sensei who had developed a four hour self defense class for the Japanese business man, which utilized natural body movements and simplistic techniques which are easily recalled during stressful situations. Nakabayashi Sensei was later hired by the U.S. Marine Corps to train troops in this simplistic art.

    James,
Heres a link that has a pretty good basic description.

I have known Ernie Cates, the founder of the system, for several years
so i can vouch the system is legit.

In addidtion to training under Nakabiyashi he studied Judo under Kotani Sensei.

Here's a link to an interview with him.

You can contact him directly via the info at the end of the interview.
He is verry approachable and would answer any questions you may have.

Thanks for the links Joe! I'll check them out. I'm interested in the details of the 4hr course so I will ask him if he is happy to tell me anything.

He was Ronald Duncan's Judo instructor back in the late 50's.

Jimmy Fatwing is pulling your leg, I reckon.

I would not take anything away from this gent's military, judo competition record, and public service, but really, 'Neko ryu' is too good not to ask about.

I'm sorry, but you say since you know this gent so you can vouch for the system? I don't get the relationship - what's that to do with the system? Would you tell us what you know about the system?

I reckon anyone who'd name themselves Soke and 10th dan ought to be accessible!

    Expectantly yours,
    To clarify,
I have taken several seminars and have had many one on one conversations
with Mr. Cates since I first met him about 15 years ago. That is what I mean
when I say I "know him".

As far as the "Soke" title... to me, it is what it is.
Any time hes ever introduced himself it was always "Hi, I'm Ernie Cates."
I have never called him anything but sensei, and when I questioned him about
titles and such he just shruged and remarked that sensei was apropritate.

As far as the system, from my limited point of view it's judo and jujitsu stripped
down to the simplest moves. Mainly focusing on body alignment and natural
    movements.
The name simply translate to "Cat Style Self Defense", because he like the
attitude of the cat. Great flexability, strength and agility and all he does is nap
and stretch. Also he joke at seminars by saying , you can charge more to teach
someone "Goshin Jitsu" than just "Self Defense"

If you have any other questions I'll see if I can answer them

If anyone is still following this thread, I can supply whatever information you are looking for. (I've been a student of Sensei Cates since 1993.) Sensei Cates is probably the least pretentious high Dan anyone will ever meet. He's now 80 years old, semi-retired, and his eldest son "Moose" is the formal head of Neko-Ryu. Sensei Cates still does seminars & camps but is now limited by age & health issues.

    Default The warm-ups

I was very interested to read the old interview with Mr. Cates (whom I met about ten years ago - a gentleman), and am very curious about his grappling "warm-ups" that he describes - link above. Are there any film clips of them.

    Ellis,

I don't know of any videos of his grappling warmups online. At some point I need to go through the many videos I have from various camps and clinics to get more of this available to those who haven't had the pleasure of working with him. Philosophically he preferred not to do traditional calisthenics as warmups as those only worked on physical conditioning without working on skills. His warmups were often grappling skills that would also warm people up. Many people would at first think he was skipping "warm-ups" as he had people working on skills at the beginning of class. Then they would realize the skills practice at the beginning of class was the warm-up — and it was a very good warmup that didn't detract from time people could have been working on skills.
