Well, the sign hanging on the wall reads 全日本戸山流居合道連盟 (Zen Nihon Toyama Ryu Iaido Renmei), but that doesn't neccesarily mean everone in the pictures is doing Toyama Ryu. They're just the sponsors or organizers.

True enough. What ryuha is featured in the sparring-videos?

Interesting armor. I liked the use of Nike soccer shinpads on the one guy's forearms

Actually, a few guys in the Yagyukai use children's soccer knee guards on their forearms so that shidachi can hit full force with the fukuroshinai. They're light, cheap, easy to remove, and don't interfere with arm movement.

That is Hataya-sensei's organization. He teaches this and other things in addition to Toyama Ryu. I believe Sang Kim sensei from the New York Toyama group won this competition. It is with blunted steel weapons, looks like Hataya-sensei himself was judging.

I believe this was their annual tai kai in Japan (Machida?) held in June of this year. Only one of the events, also had the usual kata, kumitachi and shizan. One of the guys in that group would have to tell you about rules.

This was the annual Japanese Toyamaryu Taikai, held in Machida.
The weapons are real steel swords, just not sharpened.
(And FYI, the bouts have to stop every 30 seconds because the swords bend ALL the time. Very informative re. a "real" duel.)
The armor is a combination of kendo, soccer, and whatever else works.
The rules are minimal: basically try to avoid hitting in the back (where there is no armor), try to avoid getting your sword under the neck/shoulder protection where you can really hit the neck and kill someone, and try to avoid stabbing the kissaki through the armor and killing someone.
Other than that, anything goes, first legit contact wins, anywhere on the body.
    And yes Sang won.

    Regards,

Interesting video. I also wondered what this would look like. The first pictures I saw of this habikito gekiken thing were in some kind of wrestling ring, so I thought it was a bit of a spectacle, but these videos are much better.

Do any other ryuha participate in this or is it mainly a Toyama Ryu thing? Also are the Mugairyu folks alright with their monte participating in this kind of event? Also are they pulling their blows at all or are full force strikes allowed?

I assume there must be some kind of waiver to sign in case of serious accident.

I'd like to see a match like this starting with nagebokuto! (throw bokuto to each participant and start the match when they catch the weapon).

Well, but the swords must be made of an Japanese smith right? Sounds like an expensive training. I don't know if I like this or not. Need more info.
So, when do they start using Naginata
