Maniwa Nen Ryu: Sword Sparring

If I'm not mistaken, the beginning of this clip, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bel3EpC26aQ, is sparring by Maniwa Nen Ryu. A ryu that's supposed to be even older than Katori Shinto Ryu, if I'm not wrong.

Pity the clip is in a language I don't understand.

Even if it looks like Maniwa Nen Ryû to me too. The speaker mentions that the "round sticks" (as he calls them) are from the Araki Ryû.

This video clip is number 4 of a 12 part series. The narrator in the video is trying to explain the various martials arts of japan and how some of them relate to each other. In the narration of part 3 he states that the sword was replaced in some instances by the wooden sword or bokken. In the start of part 4 he states that the bokken was very dangerous to use and was replaced with a more flexible wood sword in the ryu mentioned and that this ryu was the start of "modern" kendo. Or in other words those guys are practicing an early form of kendo. The samurai needed a safe way to practice swordsmanship. Kendo permited them to practice with out killing off their partner.

Is this book perhaps, Mr. Watson? It was released together with the film in 1977, by the same author.

Yeh it looks like half is comprised of Tachi otoshi and the other half is shin shin...Not the Tachi otoshi no midare we are used to today. I personally haven't heard of this kata or of this variation in the current curriculum.

Could be that Shiokawa Sensei (Shidachi in that kata) used some artistic license and put those two kata together for the embu. Either that or his mind slipped and he did the shin shin part accidentally. (can happen to anyone, even a Menkyo Kaiden )
