She wasn't making the progress I expected due to her stubborn attitude - that disappeared after my example of her vulnerability. Sometimes you have to shake someone awake to get their motivation up.

    Martyn,

I get it now - you were just being bad with this particular student.

    Happy landings,

    Bad? BAD? I was terrific!

Part of my job is to make people a bit more paranoid. If the verbal message fails to come across, I have to venture onto other means of communication.

    Default Use every means...

One of the things that the Cyndy Hayashi article shows is that just because you know aikido (or karate, or judo, etc.), that doesn't mean in a self-defense situation you use only textbook techniques. Use whatever works in that situation, and those budo (or even baseball, if you have a baseball bat) can be effective. The original question of whether or not aikido "works" is kind of a misdirection. "Works" for what? Works for me. For self-defense solely? Then, as another poster said, get a concealed weapon. Study modern self-defense tactics and do it over and over again daily until you can do it in your sleep. But even that may not work all the time. Nothing works all the time.
