Very interesting, especially considering that video clips of legitimate Kashima Shinryu are (afaik) rather rare as they generally frown upon being filmed while demonstrating kata. Does anyone understand what is being said in these clips or have any more information about who these people performing the katas are? Looking at their gear they appear to be rather highly ranked.

The two gentlemen in the white hakama in the clips are Seki Humitake (the current headmaster of the ryuha) and Akinaga Hiroyuki (the current Executive Secretary for the Kashima-Shinryu Budo Renmei). I don't know who the third guy is.

Its an interesting ryu. I really like the closequarters applications such as the one at 02:20.

Professor Friday, is it typical in Kashima Shinryu for the senior to take the shidachi role in embu?

There's no hard and fast rule for this in Kashima-Shinryu. In training, the senior student normally takes the uchitachi role, but in public demonstrations, seniors do sometimes act as shitachi . The paramount concern is generally the integrity of the kata themselves.

I was wondering what weapon was used by the shitachi against the uchitachi in the first part of the second video?

    Thank you.
