    Default SMR menkyo kaiden

    Hello everyone,
I was browsing the British Kendo Association (BKA) website and found one of the question for their latest grading session in jodo for sandan and yondan. The question was:
“Name three principal students of Shimizu Takaji Sensei.”

First I wish in France we had “written exams” associated with our grading session. I found them an excellent way to study other aspects of our discipline. But that’s another story…

My question is then, what is the answer to the BKA question?
(if you look at my signature you’ll notice that I have no interest in the answer other than pure curiosity since I am actually from France

Furthermore, the BKA question made me ask myself who is currently holding a menkyo kaiden license in SMR ?
I must emphasize that my 2 questions are somehow unrelated since I am absolutely not implying that only those sensei should be considered as “principle students of…” .
PS I have browsed the archive and found some elements of answer about US license holder in various koryu (thank you for redirecting me if this was already discussed).

    Thanks for your input

I'm not sure about the "three students" question, but below is a list of past and present Menkyo Kaidens of SMR, both Tokyo and Fukuoka in no particular order.

    Otofuji Ichizo (deseased)
    Kuroda Ichitaro (d.)
    Nakajima Asakichi (d.)
    Kaminoda Tsunemori
    Pascal Krieger
    Matsui Kenji
Nishioka Tsuneo , Who I believe is the most senior living (and practicing) student of Shimizu Sensei.
    Matsumura Shigehiro
    Donn F. Draeger (d.)
    Quentin Chambers
    Phil Relnick
    Nobuko Relnick
    Yoneno Kotaro
    Hiroi Tsunenji
    Nakajima Asakichi (d.)
    Namitome Shigenori

There are plenty more but these ones are just from memory. Hope that helps (a little)

    Kuroda Ichitaro (d)
    Yoneo Kotaro
    Hiroi Tsuneji
    Kaminoda Tsunemori
    Nishioka Tsuneo
    Hamaji Yasutake

    Hope this helps

    Thumbs up SMR menkyo

    Thanks a lot
I did not know there were so many of them, it's impressive.

Is there a difference between "Hiroi tsunenji" (or tsuneji?) sensei and "Hiroi tsunetsugu" sensei ?

    Cheers to all

    Stephan,

I do not think there is any difference. I believe that the character can be read as "ji" or "tsugu"
