I think kata as part of the whole concept in one art can not be automatically compared with similar schools in sword arts let alone be compared with the concept of kata in another art such as karate.

Therefore I realize I cannot speak for the authenticy of experience Joshua has with kata in his practise. I believe him right away! When there is no such thing as fixed position, transition in kata as I describe it then indeed in your view Brian I have no understanding at all. I agree then. From my own experience kata in sword arts can be a great trainingtool but in the end it is about what you want to achieve with it. I think I only came on this subject in relation to the topic Free practice in Koryu but not to start wether kata has validation or not, that is not what I intended or am interested in. My first interest was in how people viewed 'free' practise.

Chris Thompson, did you ever see the 2 links, also free sparring, interesting to see the different materials used when you compare the 2 links and the effect on bodymovement.

It should be noted that Ishiyama Ryu is NOT koryu. Russell McCartney developed IYR from his practice of Toyama Ryu and Nakamura Ryu under Obata Toshishiro.

It seems people should have better understanding of the meanings of waza and Kata. Waza is a tried and tested technique. Only survivors passed it on. Kata is form or shape. Most Kata are made up. But we can describe a part of waza as it's kata. Classical Budo generally teaches waza. On a man to man basis we can teach it by slowing things down to avoid injury. We can bastardize it by wearing protection. But this is the sword arts section. Swords are sharp and pointy and put us in hospital if we do free practice.

All the best techniques are taught by survivors.
