    Default need help in Osaka

    Hey everyone,

I just moved to Osaka, Japan. I've been in Japan only a few months, but I have a background in kendo. I used to be sandan but stopped training many years ago (about 6).

Since coming to Japan I feel like I must take up budo again. Must use the opportunity.

Could anyone please advise me about gaijin friendly dojos in Osaka. I'm looking for kendo, any if there is ANY chance of studying koryu anywhere near here I would also be interested in that.

    A million thanks.

Sent him an email but he didn't reply.

Surely there must be other opportunities in Osaka...

When did you sent him the email? People are busy, have holidays, etc.... Give him some more days. He will reply.

First of all why go for “gaijin” friendly?. You are in Japan so go for quality!! Having said so, I know the kenshi247 people from their website (impressive stuff). So I would think they know what they are talking about (but I am not great in kendo so ask the specialists)!

I do know som koryu people in Kansai (I think).

When I trained in Hontai Yoshin-ryu (Nishinomiya), I used to live in Osaka (although this is 24 years ago, I have been going there on a yearly basis). It only takes 15-20 min by train from Umeda (Osaka) to Imazu (Nishinomiya) by Hanshin railways. Hontai Yoshin-ryu is my school and of course I can recommend it but I am probably biased.

There is also Daito-ryu Aikijujutsu Takumakai in Ashiy, which is a further towards Kobe.

    In Osaka I know there is Shibukawa-ryu Jujutsu (Jusohon-machi, Yodogawa-ku). The current head is Mizuta Masuo, 11th generation. It is a jujutsu school, also known for its Kusarigama and Bo, Influenced by Sekiguchi-ryu. However other weapons (like sword, naginata, yari, kodachi, tessen) are also part of the curriculum. He is a great guy and we met during the party of the Itsukushima jinja enbu some years ago, but his accent is really heavy “Osaka-ben (Osaka dialect) or may-be this was because we all had too much sake;

Since you have a background in kendo, you might be interested in Enshin-ryu Iai Suemonogiri Kenpo (Hannan-chou, Abeno-ku, Osaka), an Iai-jutsu school in which the art of cutting is called Suemonogiri,. The current headmaster is Masumoto Takamasa. He is a friend of our soke and he gave me great advice when I ordered my sword (actually a daisho) a few years ago.

I believe there is also a Sojutsu school, Fuden-ryu Sojutsu (derived from Takeuchi-ryu) in Osaka lead by Imanishi (12th generation soke) but I don’t know them well.

Ryukyu oke Hiden Motobu Udonde (Hori, Kaiduka-shi, Osaka), might not qualify as a conventional koryu but they are part of the Nihon Kobudo Kyokai. Motobu udonde is a martial art from the time of the Ryukyu Kingdom (Okinawa). The current headmaster is Motobu Chosei, 14th generation headmaster, he is also the son of the legendary Okinawa Karate Master Motobu Choki (Motobu Kempo).

How long are you staying in Japan? Some koryu don't allow foreigners to join unless they intend to be in Japan for something like 10 years.

Well, George is practicing koryū as well (though I do not know which one). He could help you there as well.

This used to be rule for Katori Shinto Ryu, until they decided to bring the students of the Sugino lines into the fold. It's currently the rule for mainline Yagyu Shinkage-ryu, unless you come from a place, like New York, where you can continue your training after leaving Japan.

There is also a lot of Mugai Ryu Iai in the Kansai region as the previous Soke (11th), Nakagawa Shinichi lived in Kobe. The current 12th Soke, Nakatani Ryutaro, is in Kishiwada (right outside Kansai Intl. Airport) and runs the "shingikan" which has been a main dojo in the NIR Mugai Kai for over 50 years. Several of the Kaidensha from Nakagawa Soke instructed there and Nakagawa Soke was a frequent guest until his died in 1981. Nakatani Soke is carrying on the Ryu and tradition as Soke and chairman of Mugai Kai. The Nippon Iaido Renmei is well represented in the Area - both Mugai Ryu as mentioned as well as Muso Jikiden Eishin Ryu (website: www.nichiren.or.jp)

I don’t practice Mugai-ryu but one of my teachers of the honbu dojo of HYR, Sato Kimimaro Sensei (menkyo-kaiden), did. We nevertheless spoke about Mugai-ryu on several occasions and Sato sensei did teach me (together with some fellow students of HYR) a little but only to illustrate the difference with what we knew.

He told me that Nakagawa was the last soke, but there was no successor (although he did award some menkyo kaiden).

I thought the Mugai Kai was lead by a chairman who is not a soke.

Unfortunately Sato sensei passed away in 2007 (just after we did an embu together in Kumamoto), so I can’t ask him. There is however an interview of him on Mugai-ryu that was published several years ago (I think even discussed here at that time).

Funny that you speak of Katori Shinto ryu and Sugino-sensei as of two seperated things.

But still: 10 years? Times changed and to make sure that one is able to live in Japan for that period of time? How they wanna judge if you will stay or not?
